People owe more than €229 billon on overdrafts, personal loans, and credit cards already. The lenders are accused of enticing the consumers of getting into debt by offering easy solutions for getting credit and cheques.

People can easily write cheques from money on their credit cards rather than money in the bank accounts. So far, over thirty-two million cheques have been assigned this year. Thus, the Prime Minister stated on BBC that the country government intends to put an end to credit card cheques.

The government is also considering whether the credit card companies can be banned from setting higher credit card limits without consulting the consumers or cardholders.

Some people feel threatened by this government decision so they search for credit cards UK offers that allow them to have backup solutions. Thus, if you are searching for UK credit cards take care to look for the best deals and use your cards wisely. Credit card providers are also feeling threatened so they too are offering better deals on APR and interest rates on their credit cards.

The Bank of England has recently stated that credit card customers are likely to keep the credit card limit they have or see it reduced. Because of so many credit card holders in default it is unlikely that the banks will lend more to credit card holders. There is also talk that the terms of the credit cards will change.

Interest rates on credit cards have not been reduced even though the cost of finance has dropped recently. Because consumer credit is still considered risky the banks are in no hurry to approve higher credit lines, but they don’t have a problem with lowering them. They have much less risk involved if they lower a credit limit, and customers should be prepared for this to happen.

There is also talk that the credit scoring criteria will be much more intensive. Because of this, getting a new credit card without having a stellar credit rating may be non – existent.

All of the major banks in the UK: Barclays, HSBC, Lloyd’s Banking Group, Royal Bank of Scotland, Banco Santander and Nationwide have made it known that they do not expect to expand credit to consumers in the near future.

The recent economic downturn has many lenders of credit cards using the credit records more than ever before. Although some of the high street banks are seeing more profits than in recent years they are still reigning in credit card offers. Research shows that even if there is a minor infraction on a person’s credit record it may be enough to stop them for procuring a credit card.

A late payment may heretofore have been dismissed as a reason to not issue a credit card; however, in today’s market that may mean the denial of a credit card. This comes even if the infraction was beyond the control of the potential new credit card holder.

Other people may be wrongly denied because of an error on their credit records. This has many people angry because they feel they are being treated unfairly.

The issuing banks are not really giving up information about how many people are being turned down for credit cards because of instances such as these. However, the credit reference agencies have provided some insight. They report that the number of inquiries from people trying to get a credit card has been up. Scores are also being triangulated differently now so it could affect getting a credit card.

Users of an ATM machine at a Tesco branch recently felt as though they won the lottery. It seems that a problem occurred with an ATM and the machine was giving out free cash. Anyone that was using the ATM for this brief period of time would insert their credit card and get back twice the amount of money that they asked for.

News of the malfunction spread like the plague with people calling family and friends and telling them of their good fortune. It seems that they had about fifty people in a queue before anyone from Tesco noticed. Witnesses to the debacle said people were using multiple credit cards and debit cards to pull money out of the ATM.

It seems that there was an internal operational problem with the cash machine that allowed it to provide the free money. If people were asking for twenty pounds the cash machine gave them forty pounds. Once this error was discovered the ATM machine was immediately closed down.

The UK supermarket and financial services provider made a statement that they would not try to recover the free money that customers were awarded. An eyewitness said it was a real frenzy around the cash machine, with people calling everyone they knew.

What type of credit card an individual needs will depend on their financial situation. Because of this the UK market has many credit card choices. The first thing that anyone looking for a credit card must know is what their finances will allow. When this variable is known then an intelligent credit card choice can be made.

Don’t go for a Gold or Platinum credit card just because your friends may have one or it looks impressive. The interest rates that come with some of these credit cards may not be the best choice for you. If one of these cards can fit into your financial situation however, then a person should take advantage of the offer.

People will have unique requirements so finding the best choice may require a little research. While a 0% interest rate sounds good it may or may not be the best choice. This type of credit card generally is offered as an introductory rate. Try to get the longest time period you can with this rate if your situation warrants it. Find out if the 0% or low interest rate is for new purchases or can only be used on a balance transfer. This way you can make an informed decision.

Some of the credit cards that people are applying for do not rely on the amount of money that a potential new customer makes. About two thirds of the credit cards can be obtained by persons making less than ten thousand pounds a year. Three of these credit cards are issued by the Labour Party.

While politicians taunt responsible lending practices, many of their parties don’t ask for minimum salary requirements. The Labour and Lib Dems have given out more credit cards than the Conservatives at this time.

Gordon Brown gave credit card companies a lashing about irresponsible lending practices, and then his party had a fund raising credit card last holiday season that had an 18.9% interest rate.

Studies have shown that more than fifteen thousand people have a Labour credit card, with three thousand five hundred credit cards from the Lib Dems. The Conservative credit card in contrast has only one hundred customers at this time.

A third of the credit card issuers ask for an income of at least twenty five thousand pounds a year, but the others ask for a salary between four thousand and twenty thousand pounds a year. Some platinum credit cards only require twelve thousand pounds for their credit cards.

Egg announced they are launching a new credit card. Well, in actuality it is a re- launch of premium plastic cards with better rewards and benefits than they have offered in the last year. Egg Money World MasterCard is providing 1 percent cashback on all transactions. There is going to be a 1 pound a month charge.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to new credit cards charging a fee. Egg is not asking for a huge fee, as it comes to 12 pounds for the year, but other cards will be asking for a higher annual fee.

At the moment only 7.3 percent of credit card issuers are charging an annual fee which runs from 12 pounds to over a hundred pounds. There are benefits to the annual fee. For example some cards will not charge interest if their annual fee is high. This saves the person from paying a variable interest rate, but if they pay the card off it really doesn’t help.

Experts believe that Egg is trying to encourage consumers to change credit card companies. By offering a small annual fee with rewards they are in a better situation than a card with no annual fee and no rewards. The consumer will have to determine whether they believe it is actually worth it to change cards. There is a risk of being turned down, which hits the credit record. Still, with the card offering a life of the balance transfer deal at 8.9 percent and a 16.9 percent on purchases it does look like a nice card. There is purchase protection and a range of discounts offered with the card as well.

The only way to tell if the credit card from Egg is worthy is to compare it to others.

The United Kingdom has been reporting that their credit card debts are beginning to lower, but this is not true of all areas. Scotland, unlike the rest of the UK, has been suffering from rising credit card debts. A recent study showed the average person in Scotland has credit card debt at £6600 when combined with other unsecured loans. This is up by over £1600 since April.

Scotland is now suffering more financially than the rest of the UK. It was found that 64 percent of Scots do not have a repayment plan for their debts. 79 percent haven’t told their partner about the credit card debt that they have. Scotland has now been ranked as the third highest average level of credit card debt in the UK. Northwest England is the highest, with east England in second place.

Several experts believe it is not only the credit card holder who has not been responsible, but also the credit card companies. They are urging the companies to be stricter regarding who can get a credit card, and to make changes to get the debts under control.

CEO of Guardian Financial Group stated that they are shocked at the level of personal debt, especially the amount that is on credit cards. With only 23 percent of credit card holders telling their partners about their debt, something is very wrong.

Credit card companies are the ones to determine risk of allowing a person to have a credit card. They must be more regulated in assessing the risk. Upping the interest rates is not penalising the credit card holders in the right way. Instead it just makes it more difficult to pay the debts down. The rates are increasing disproportionately, especially in the last six months. Experts urge for a better solution.

Credit cards are often a convenient way to pay for something one cannot afford. Unfortunately, all too often credit cards can become a problem. Not everyone can predict a credit crunch. In fact most consumers hope their government and financial experts will tell them when trouble begins to brew; however, when left unawares this can spark further issues. Unemployment is the leading cause of credit problems because the person feels secure in their position and then the economy changes.

Several Britons are suffering from financial difficulties and solve the issue by missing or making late payments to their credit cards. When this occurs the customer is charged at least twelve pounds for the missed payment, and generally 25 pounds. The information is then recorded on their credit history reports, which hurts credit lending in the future. There are ways to avoid making late payments or missing payments all together.

The most obvious is paying the card off in full each month, but most cannot afford to do this. The best option when you cannot make the minimum payment is to discuss this with the credit card company. Most credit card companies will change your due date once to help you make the payments on time. This change is permanent. You can also discuss your situation to determine if your history with the company will lower the rate further or if they have a program for hardship issues. Typically you are hit with higher interest on deals like this, but it can help in the short term rather than hurting your credit.

You also need to stop using the card as soon as you begin to have problems with making the credit card payments. This will help prove you are serious about taking care of your debts rather than making them worse.

In the past five years credit card companies slowly began to weed out the annual fees to make credit cards more accessible to the general population. A study was released on July 16, 2009 that states the annual fees may be returning to most credit cards in 2010. The Auriemma Consulting Group did a study about cards that do not have fees. They found that rewards will be taken away, and so will other basic benefits consumers have been enjoying.

The group found the credit card companies feel this is a wise move. With an annual fee the consumer is less likely to keep a balance on their card because the fee will be too much on top of interest. The lack of rewards will also make it less likely for consumers to use their cards. If they are not getting cash back, air miles, or other discounts the consumer will feel their debit card is the better option. They may also begin to feel they do not need the products if they cannot pay off the debt before the end of the month.

In the past 18 months the number of consumers carrying balances on their cards has already been reduced. In fact this decrease has been about 40 percent in the past year. Consumers are working harder to pay their bills and searching for alternatives. Consumers are staying clear of any credit card with an annual fee, especially when they are looking for a balance transfer. Card issuers are still going to be creating new products, but this will be a tiered rewards and benefits option. For those not paying the annual fee they may not see benefits. Those paying a higher annual fee will see the most benefits. In other words card issuers are going back to the past.
