Student Jailed For Credit Card Scam

A student in Ireland was sentenced to five months for credit card fraud. He attempted to use a fraudulent credit card to book a hotel room in Galway. Kehinde Oduneye is not a national to Ireland. He is 22 and lives in Dublin. This week he pled guilty to charges of dishonesty. He attempted to book the room for himself and some other friends at the Ardilaun Hotel in Taylor’s Hill back in August of 2008.

Vouchers worth 1,142 Euros were bought by the defendant on the credit card. The vouchers were on a site that advertises hotels. The real owner of the credit card noticed the fraudulent charges and reported them. Three rooms in all had been booked. The defence solicitor stated it was an opportunity crime. He was trying to get to a wedding for a friend and was asked if he could book the rooms. The defendant admitted the card was fraudulent and he knew it. Instead of turning the card over he decided instead to help this “friend” despite being a third year student in biotechnology. He has been in Ireland for six years. It was temptation, he said, to use the card. The hotel has been compensated for the fraud.
